Sci-Fi
If you're checking out this page, I'm assuming you already own your letterboxed copies of The Star Wars Trilogy: both versions. There are some other great sites out there with all the info you need to know, so I won't even try. But if you're looking for some other Sci-Fi classics, how about some Ridley Scott?
Blade Runner is not for everyone, but it is Harrison Ford worlds away from Han Solo in a techno-karaoke-opium-drenched-nightmare. Well, at least that's how it feels on our side of the screen. Basically, Ridley does Apocalypse Now style and pacing in a futuristic setting. He continues this from Alien, which in turn took just as much from Kubrick's 2001 as from anything else. Check out Joe & Andy's Corner for more on Alien and the true difference between it and Cameron's Aliens.
2001 is basically the modern Sci-Fi film touchstone. Every film since has got its fingerprint somewhere within. Enrapturing snail's pacing and antiseptic detail suck you into the deep void of space in a film that creates a dialectic of anxiety and utter peace at every moment. This is kind of what I imagine drowning to be like. Stay with it if you know you can swim. I guarantee you'll never look at a film the same way again.
