Video Pick of the Week:
War Games
It's good to see Matthew Broderick on the big screen again. (He's in Godzilla--so go see it, you ass). So in honor of Broderick's current work, CoolMovies proudly recommends as its Video Pick of the Week the 1983 classic, War Games.
War Games has it all--Matthew Broderick as the vulnerable and endearing David Lightman; video arcades; Ally Sheedy; WWIII nuke paranoia; a weird, fatalist, supposedly deceased genius professor named Falken; future Reservoir Dog Michael Madsen; the WOPR; that nerdy guy from Midnight Madness; the first-ever description of a Gen-X slacker with a Cold-War twist ("bright...an under-achiever...he's a classic case for recruitment by the Russians"); Barry Corbin in a military proto-Maurice-Minnefield role; wise-ass high school kids; NORAD; Dabney Coleman as (surprise!) an officious dickweed; a near-miss with Global Thermonuclear War; and probably the coolest line ever spoken by a computer: "A strange game, professor. The only winning move is not to play."
It was also nominated for Best Cinematography, Original Screenplay and Sound at the Academy Awards. So don't just take our word for it.
